PTO Sponsors Right to Read Week for East Woods Elementary

East Woods Elementary School celebrated “Right to Read” the week of April 6th. It was a huge hit with the students. The students created an “amulet” (medallion) during library time and got to wear them on Tuesday. On Wednesday, they dressed as their favorite book character; on Thursday, they wore graphic t-shirts. The week ended on Friday with the students going on a scavenger hunt in search of “Miskit”, (a character in the Amulet book series).

Students also shared their creative talents in a robot-building contest and comic strip contest. The highlights of the week were the assemblies featuring author and illustrator Kazu Kibuishi. He is best known as the graphic novelist who created the Amulet series. Some of his other works include; Daisy Kutter Comics, Copper, and the Flight series. He told the children how he became a graphic novelist and taught them how comics are made. He even created an original illustration for them using the computer. He shared lunch with selected students from each class and signed books for students who purchased them. Fans of Amulet were excited to hear that Amulet 3 will hit the bookstores in September. The week’s events were planned and sponsored by the Hudson PTO.
